RUKORYO - Rubén Mañas Navarrete
He is a potter and ceramic artist from Badalona, Catalonia, Spain. He mainly teaches wheel-throwing courses, both nationally and internationally. His technical approach is based on years of experience and a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of pottery and ceramics.
In addition to teaching, he documents all his work on Instagram, from the creative process to exhibitions of his own work. His aim is to provide his audience with a comprehensive insight into the craft and to share knowledge with the wider community.
His journey in ceramics began in 2018 at the Escola de Ceràmica de la Bisbal, where he learned the fundamentals of wheel-throwing under the guidance of master potter Dolors Ros. In 2022, he continued his training at the school of master potter Ramon Fort, also in Girona, where he further developed his knowledge.
However, his pursuit of excellence did not stop in Spain. In 2023, he travelled to the Republic of Korea, where he had the honour of learning from master potter Yoo Sung. From the fundamentals of porcelain to the creation of traditional pieces, he focused particularly on the Moonjar, a distinctive form that has become his speciality.
Since then, he has sought to continue his training in Korea, travelling there once a year to keep learning and evolving.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Bamboos
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
This piece is a personal interpretation of bamboo, representing its minimalist elegance. The white glaze with black “ink” marks seeks to recreate the effect of sumi-e painting. Ultimately, it is a celebration of simplicity and natural imperfection, moving away from tradition towards a contemporary visual language.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
DAL HANG-ARI
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
This moonjar was born out of respect for a culture. It is the result of continuous learning and a tribute to Korean craftsmanship.
To understand the soul of Korean ceramics, I travel to South Korea every year to train in the craft and follow its tradition.
My intention with this moonjar has been to remain faithful to the original technique of the Joseon dynasty.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Marea
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
Marea is a moonjar that brings together Korean tradition and chance. Its globular form, inspired by the full moon, has historically represented purity. However, what makes this piece unique is the unpredictability of the glaze. I was not seeking a planned effect; it emerged from a surprise during the firing.
This unexpected “tide” disrupts the perfect proportions of the moonjar, bringing dynamism and authenticity. It is the result of allowing the fire and the materials to speak for themselves.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Origen Natural
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
This moonjar is a statement of material honesty and a journey back to its origins. Wheel-thrown with fine grog and without any glaze, the piece is presented in its purest state. Nothing conceals its original texture or form.
With this title, it pays homage to the classical form while also serving as a physical testament to its own history through different stages of its life, yet with the same purpose throughout.
