GRETE MCNORTON
Grete McNorton was recently nominated Winner of the ‘Prix Avenir Ceramic 2025’
organised by the ‘Réseau des Centres Céramiques’, France.
For over twenty years, Grete McNorton has co-directed the drawing research centre
DRAWinternational in Caylus, cultivating a contemporary space dedicated to artistic
exchange and experimentation.
In 2023, she initiated a decisive shift in her own practice, moving away from polluting
materials such as fibreglass and resin in favour of porcelain — a medium whose
unexpected versatility opened new formal and conceptual possibilities.
Working at the intersection of porcelain, textile, and drawing, Grete interrogates the
construction of volume and the status of the domestic object. Her approach resonates
with the legacy of artists such as Eva Hesse and Tony Cragg, while also engaging with
the critical questions that shaped the emergence of sculptural ceramics between the
1990s and 2010s: the role of accident inherent in firing processes, the politics of
recycling, and the persistence of functional memory embedded in objects.
Her sculptures are marked by manganese oxide washes and graphite lines, partially
erased, leaving behind traces of gesture and time. Burnt textiles, once soft and intimate,
imprint their folds, patterns and textures onto porcelain surfaces, while fragments -
inspired by elements unearthed from her garden — become embedded vestiges. Each
work bears the scars of its making: folds, fractures, residues, and absences that testify to
transformation rather than conceal it.
By incorporating beloved but discarded garments from her own wardrobe, Grete
situates her practice within a lineage of women artists who have combined ceramics
and textiles to address intimacy, domestic labour, and gendered histories of making.
With subtle humour, she reclaims and reconfigures the notion of “women’s work,”
transforming acts of care and repair into gestures of resistance and authorship.
In Grete’s practice, porcelain becomes both skin and archive, recording the
disappearance of fabric while preserving its memory. Her sculptures inhabit a space
between fragility and endurance, where the domestic meets the archaeological, and
where material bears witness to lived experience.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Belonging n°1
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
Belonging is not a fixed place to arrive at, but an ongoing process of transformation. It is built through encounters, connections and exchanges. Forms are not imposed, but emerge through acts of sewing, folding, shaping, firing and releasing. Like the feeling of belonging itself, they take shape through negotiation: they are never fully established, but remain constantly in the process of becoming something different.
YEAR OF CREATION:
2025
TECHNIQUE:
Constructed textile form – porcelain slip – oxidation firing at 1,280 °C
MAIN MATERIALS:
Natural fibres, porcelain, oxides, glaze and graphite powder.

Constructed textile form – porcelain slip – slab-built red stoneware – oxidation firing at 1,280 °C
MAIN MATERIALS:
Natural fibres, porcelain, red stoneware, oxides, glaze and graphite powder.
TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Beyond the grasp
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
The forms appear broken, altered and embedded with stories; they are not fixed conclusions, but moments within an ongoing conversation between matter, gesture and memory.
They convey the feeling of being something found or excavated and yet, they have been created.
YEAR OF CREATION:

TECHNIQUE:
Constructed textile form – porcelain slip – oxidation firing at 1,280 °C
MAIN MATERIALS:
Natural fibres, porcelain, oxides, glaze, metal wire, knitted tubing, graphite powder.
TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Duo de bonbonnières
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
I am drawn to everyday objects and to the stories they may contain. I construct forms from reused textiles that also have their own stories to tell. Through these forms, I seek to unfold the layers of time and re-establish a relationship with the object, leaving traces of the past within it while creating something new.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Still life - Pichet et vasque
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
Objects preserve traces of the past, retaining the imprint of another time, another space and another life. I am intrigued by their stories and by the way we perceive them, questioning the boundary between what is discarded and what is preserved, between residue and relic.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Still life 6 vessels
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
Starting from the transformation of the everyday into something extraordinary, I explore how everyday objects become archives of human life.
Drawing is an essential part of my research process: it is not a preparatory step, but a tool for thinking and constructing. Through spontaneous lines, overlays, stitching and erasures, it enters into dialogue with the ceramic volumes, structures the forms, determines proportions and extends the objects into space, establishing a constant interaction between 2D and 3D.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Still Life Intimate Objects
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
Identity and a sense of belonging are constructed through connections. Rather than fixed states, they are continually formed and reshaped through encounters with people, places, materials and memories. Objects preserve the traces of these relationships, retaining the imprint of different times, spaces and lived experiences.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Stitched in time
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
I am interested in objects that outlive us —quietly, anonymously—.
I have developed a practice in which matter becomes a carrier of memory. Through encapsulation and firing, these elements are recontextualised as containers, understood both as ceramic forms and as symbolic structures capable of holding memory and absence.
The works are neither restored nor idealised; instead, their fragility is preserved. Cracks, erosion, stains and repairs become narrative marks that bear witness to a lived experience.

TITLE OF THE PIECE:
Trois Petits Pichets
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
I am drawn to everyday objects, whether found, gifted or inherited, and to the stories they carry with them.
This work understands matter as a carrier of memory and meaning. Through processes that balance intention and chance, forms emerge through transformation rather than from predetermined outcomes. The sculptures are not conceived as finished objects, but as moments within an ongoing negotiation between matter, gesture and memory.

Vestige n°1
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:
I seek the story that matter itself wants to tell.
Vestige:
A structure that has developed imperfectly, with little or no usefulness, but which, at an earlier stage, served a function.
These fragile bodies embody this paradox: what is lost becomes what is preserved, and what disappears endures. Delicate, partial and yet permanent.
